NEW DELHI: A rift between disgruntled Swati Maliwal and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) grew deeper on Tuesday after the party declared Atishi the successor of CM Arvind Kejriwal.
The AAP Rajya Sabha MP had called the party’s decision to name “dummy CM” Atishi a “sad day” for the national capital.
After a dig at Atishi, who is Kejriwal’s close political confidant, Maliwal further shared a letter, alleging that Atishi’s parents wrote a mercy petition in favour of Afazal Guru, who was hanged for his involvement in the 2001 Parliament attack.
“Today is a very sad day for Delhi. Today, a woman is being made the of Delhi whose family fought a long battle to save terrorist Afzal Guru from hanging. Her parents wrote mercy petitions to the Honorable President to save terrorist Afzal Guru. According to them, Afzal Guru was innocent and was framed as part of a political conspiracy,” Maliwal wrote on X.

“Although Atishi Marlena is just a ‘Dummy CM’, still this issue is related to the security of the country. May God protect Delhi!” the AAP MP added.
Reacting to Maliwal’s attack on her own party, AAP leader Dilip Pandey said if she had even “little shame left”, she should resign as Rajya Sabha MP and instead “get a BJP ticket“.
“Understand one thing. Swati Maliwal is a person who takes the ticket to Rajya Sabha from AAP but takes the script to react from BJP. If she has even a little shame, she should resign as a Rajya Sabha MP and choose the path to Rajya Sabha on a BJP ticket. If she wants to be in Rajya Sabha, she should get ticket from BJP,” Dilip Pandey told news agency ANI.
The relations between Maliwal and AAP went downhill after the former alleged that she was assaulted by Kejriwal’s close aide Bibhav Kumar at CM’s house.
Earlier this month, however, the Supreme Court granted bail to Bibhav Kumar in the case.
The apex court noted that Kumar had been in custody for 100 days and that a chargesheet was already filed in the case. The court also directed that Bibhav Kumar should not be reinstated as the personal assistant or given any official assignment in the CM office.
