Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took a sharp dig at the Congress, accusing it of appeasement politics and challenging the party to appoint a Muslim leader as its president.
He further slammed the grand-old party for opposing the amended Waqf Act, saying that the Congress has always appeased Muslim fundamentalists and their protest against the new law proves the same.
“If you have so much sympathy for Muslims, then why not make a Muslim the party president? Give 50 per cent of the seats to Muslims in the elections,” said PM Modi.
The remarks came as PM Modi addressed a public meeting in Haryana’s Hisar after paying tributes to Dr BR Ambedkar on his 135th birth anniversary.
“Congress has only pleased some fundamentalists. The rest of the society remained miserable, uneducated, and poor. The biggest proof of this evil policy of Congress is their opposition to the amended Waqf Act,” PM Modi remarked.
He further noted that under the amended Waqf Act, the Waqf Board will no longer have the authority to interfere with the land or property of tribal communities anywhere in India.
“The new provisions will respect the sacred spirit of Waqf. The poor and Pasmanda families of the Muslim society, women, especially Muslim widows, and children will get their rights and their rights will also be protected. This is real social justice,” he added.
PM Modi Mounts Attack
PM Modi accused the Congress of turning the Constitution into a tool for gaining power. He further said that Dr BR Ambedkar’s struggle inspired his government.
“Congress turned the Constitution into a mere tool for gaining power. Whenever they felt that power slipping from their hands, they trampled upon the Constitution, just as they did during the Emergency,” said PM Modi.

“The spirit of the Constitution clearly says that there must be one common civil code for all citizens, which I call a secular civil code. But Congress never implemented it. In Uttarakhand, we have implemented a secular civil code but Congress continues to oppose it,” he added.
He went on to target Congress for its alleged mistreatment of Dr Ambedkar, saying: “We must never forget what the Congress did to Babasaheb Ambedkar. While he was alive, the party insulted him repeatedly. They made him lose elections twice.”
