Panaji: The 55th Iffi has officially announced the nominees for the prestigious ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Medal 2024. This award, established during the 46th IFFI, recognises films that inspire ethical reflection on important societal issues.
The 2024 nominees showcase a range of powerful global stories on gender, social justice, family, and historical trauma. Among the nominated films are “Crossing,“ a Swedish film that delves into the lives of Istanbul‘s transgender community, and “For Rana,“ an Iranian film that follows a couple’s desperate struggle to secure a heart transplant for their daughter.
Balint Szimler’s “Lesson Learned” a Hungarian film, critiques the country’s education system through the eyes of a troubled child. “Meeting With Pol Pot” a Cambodian film inspired by Elizabeth Becker‘s book “When the War Was Over”, explores the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime.
Other notable nominees include “Satu – Year of the Rabbit” from Laos, directed by Joshua Trigg is a poignant tale of an abandoned child’s search for identity; “Transamazonia” from South Africa, a film set in the Brazilian Amazon that highlights the fight to protect indigenous communities; and “Unsinkable” from Denmark, a suspenseful drama based on a real-life maritime disaster.
Nominees from the Indian film industry are, “Aamar Boss” a Bengali film about a mother and son facing financial hardship, and the National Award-winning “Juiphool” an Assamese film that explores the impact of border conflicts on human lives and “Srikanth” an inspiring biopic of a visually impaired entrepreneur who defied the odds to attend MIT.
