Hyderabad’s Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is witnessing a surge in outpatient visits, underscoring both the increasing demand for quality healthcare and the hospital’s expanding capabilities. With an outpatient (OP) footfall of 9.2 lakh in 2024, a 39% increase from the 6.6 lakh patients recorded in 2022, NIMS has become a crucial pillar in the State’s medical landscape.
As per a release from the NIMS Faculty Association, the surge in patient numbers has led to a corresponding rise in surgical procedures, with medical departments now handling more complex cases than before. Cutting-edge procedures such as transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) surgeries, advanced spinal cord stimulation surgeries, and organ transplants have become routine at NIMS. Additionally, the institute has cemented its status as a leading centre for diagnosing and treating genetic disorders while operating one of the largest dialysis units in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
The rise in patient load has also placed greater demands on diagnostic services, which recorded a 32% increase in workload, jumping from 26.2 lakh tests in 2022 to 34.6 lakh in 2024, the release said. To enhance efficiency and accuracy, NIMS has introduced advanced medical equipment, including a Brain Lab for epilepsy surgery planning and the Da Vinci robotic surgical system.
The release further added that beyond clinical advancements, NIMS continues to strengthen its research portfolio, securing multiple grants from government agencies such as the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
