HYDERABAD: Yashasvi Jaiswal is relishing the opportunity of playing his first Test in familiar conditions at home after four matches in overseas conditions. The 22-year-old left-handed opener scored 171 on debut against the West Indies and followed it up with scores of 57 and 38 in the Caribbean islands. The two-Test series in South Africa didn’t go too well for him as he scored 17 and five in Centurion and 0 and 28 in Cape Town.
“This is my first Test in India and I was thinking about contributing and doing well for my team. When I was playing in the West Indies and in South Africa it was quite different. Here it’s a different environment. I’m enjoying all the places as it is a proud moment for me to play for the country,” he said.
The southpaw looked in good nick on the first day of the Test, leading India’s charge with an unbeaten 76. He could add only four runs to his overnight tally on Friday but his innings set the tone for India to score at nearly four runs an over for most part of the second day.
“We were trying to play positive cricket. I was also trying to do the same, play some positive shots,” he said as India finished the day at 421/7. “It would have been amazing if I scored a hundred, but what brought me here was my process and thinking. I was quite positive in my mind and I was keen to make sure that I keep building the innings.”
Explaining his dismissal to Joe Root, Jaiswal said: “I knew he was going to bowl at some point and I was prepared to face him (Root). But as I said, I was trying to do my best. Sometimes, I can make mistakes and get out and I am trying to make sure I learn from my mistakes.”
The 175-run lead can be a handful on a wicket showing some signs of wear and tear. Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel look well set too. “We will be looking to build on the lead. The more runs we can add, the better it will be. The wicket is offering good assistance to spinners,” Jaiswal added.
