INDORE/BHOPAL: For the seventh year in a row, Indore won the #1 rank in Swachh Survekshan, but for the first time it has had to share the top honours with challenger Surat.
Indoreans were on seventh heaven, but took the shared honours as a wake-up call since Surat pipped it to the post on residents’ responses. In the citizen voice segment, Surat gained the lead with 2,144 points to Indore’s 2,139.
Indore scored 9,348 points out of 9,500 in the overall scores to be ranked first among 446 urban local bodies in the country. Madhya Pradesh lost its #1 rank as cleanest state, as Maharashtra pushed it to second place. Mhow was adjudged the cleanest cantonment, and Ujjain and Gwalior figure in the top 20.
Chief minister Mohan Yadav was ecstatic. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Madhya Pradesh will continue to contribute to realizing the Swachhta resolve. Our state will perform even better in the upcoming survey,” he said.
State urban development minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, the Indore-1 MLA, congratulated the people of Indore and said, “We have shown to the world that we are the best in maintaining cleanliness. Now, we must gear up to keep the city clean and win the award for the eighth time.”
“MP has come second this time. We will make every effort to ensure that it becomes number one,” he added. Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava credited the success to the people of Indore, IMC employees and sanitation workers.
