Former US president Donald Trump has been advised by the Secret Service to ramp up his security details if he wanted to continue golfing. During a meeting at Mar-a-Lago on Monday, Secret Service chief Ronald Rowe informed Trump that it was challenging to effectively secure large, open areas.
This after the former president had asked whether it was safe for him to continue golfing regularly, according to The New York Times, which cited three sources familiar with the discussion.According to the secret service chief, the golf course at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland is easier to secure because it is a military course.
Earlier on Sunday, Trump was quickly escorted off a golf course after Secret Service agents fired at a man seen aiming a rifle from the treeline at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The suspect, 58-year-old Ryan Routh, was arrested and appeared in court on Monday, facing two gun-related charges.
This incident follows rising tensions between the Trump campaign and the Secret Service, which have been brewing for the past two months, particularly after the first attempt on Trump’s life in July.
“Former President Trump is receiving the highest level of protection that the US Secret Service can provide, and we will continue to evaluate and adjust our specific protective measures and methodology based on each location and situation,” Secret Service spokesperson Melissa McKenzie said on Tuesday.
Trump on Tuesday told Fox News “we’ve long requested more people” and that additional Secret Service protection was forthcoming.
“I think we are getting it now. Somebody told me that they will be providing more people now,” Trump told interviewer Sean Hannity by telephone.
Since the incident, both Democrats and Republicans have accused each other of using overheated rhetoric that is inspiring political violence.
