PM Modi accused the grand old party of not fulfilling their promises on poverty eradication and dubbed the slogan ‘Garibi Hatao’ as the biggest “jumla”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a veiled jibe at previous Congress-led union governments over their proposed anti-poverty schemes saying that the grand old party has adopted a favourite word — “jumla”. He accused the grand old party of not fulfilling their promises on poverty eradication and dubbed the slogan ‘Garibi Hatao’ as the biggest “jumla”.
While replying to the debate on 75 years of the adoption of the Indian Constitution in Lok Sabha, PM Modi said, “The country knows that the biggest jumla was run by one family for many generations. This was the ‘Garibi Hatao’ movement.” He added that this was such a jumla that poor people did not got the benefits of the schemes but the Congress successfully played along the vote bank politics.
Garibi Hatao Desh Bachao was the theme and slogan of Indira Gandhi’s 1971 election campaign.

He further said that the opposition Congress lacked the living experience of poverty and cited examples of the Swachh Bharat Mission and Ujjwala Yojana as the BJP government’s measures to eradicate poverty and improve the lives of women.
“For the dignity of poor, it was my government that began with the construction of toilets under Swachh Bharat mission,” he said.
While emphasising his government’s schemes implemented in the past decade, PM Modi said that said such schemes have reflected the values enshrined in the Constitution.
He laid emphasis on several schemes from building toilets for poor under Swachh Bharat Mission to providing drinking tap water.
He said that the Modi government gave cylinders to the poor under Ujjwala Yojana and implemented Ayushman Bharat for accessible health facilities provided free ration to the 80 crore poor people across the country.
“Until 2014, there were crores of people who had did not even have a bank account. This was the previous government’s sin. We changed that! We made the correct use of banks in this country,” PM Modi says as he continues to list the various welfare schemes brought about by his government.
“Our mission is uplift the poor,” he added.
