Kajol recently opened up about carving her own path in Bollywood, emphasizing that her success stemmed from the audience’s appreciation of her work rather than her family connections.

Kajol opens up about carving her own path: “It’s not about legacy, It’s every woman’s work”

During a session of Expresso, she mentioned that she has always been comfortable taking breaks from her career. Kajol, daughter of veteran actor Tanuja and wife of actor Ajay Devgn, reflected on her journey in the industry.

Kajol said, “It isn’t about legacy. It is every woman’s work. Nargis, Sharmila Tagore had no legacy. What I am today isn’t because of my lineage. It is the legacy of every woman who has worked. Every woman has to take a call that now I will take a break and if I want to come back, I will come back and she will be able to do that if she wants to.”

She further added, “If you see my filmography, I am probably the least worked actor. My mom (veteran actor Tanuja) and grandmom (late director and actor Shobhna Samarth) always told me that work is a part of your life not your whole life. I did take breaks. I wanted to get married and have kids. Thankfully I am still working and I’m still relevant… I am thankful to everyone for having a good taste so far.”

On the work front, Kajol made her Hindi film debut in 1992 with Rahul Rawail’s Bekhudi and quickly became known as one of the most natural actresses of the 1990s. She always had a clear vision of the roles and genres she wanted to explore, and was confident in taking breaks to spend time with her family.

Kajol cemented her place in Bollywood with films like Yeh Dillagi, Karan Arjun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Gupt: The Hidden Truth, Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Ishq, Dushman, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, Raju Chacha, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…. While some bombed, others became box office hits.

After her daughter’s birth in 2003, she appeared in a few films such as Fanaa, U Me Aur Hum, My Name Is Khan, We Are Family, and Toonpur Ka Superhero. Following the birth of her son Yug, Kajol took a break to focus on motherhood, making her return in 2015 with Dilwale.

She will also appear in Netflix’s Do Patti, playing the role of a police officer.
