Kangana Ranaut, who is currently promoting her upcoming film Emergency, recently shared an intriguing anecdote from her early days in Bollywood. In an interview with The Lallantop, the actress revealed that she almost lost her debut role in Gangster because Mahesh Bhatt, who was involved in the film, believed she was “too young” to handle such a demanding part. “A few days later, I got a call from Anurag and was told that I had been finalized,” Kangana said, recalling the moment she thought she had secured the role. However, her excitement was short-lived.

Chitrangada Singh was almost cast instead

Kangana disclosed that Anurag Basu, the film’s director, informed her that Mahesh Bhatt had reservations about her age. “He said that Mahesh Bhatt Saab is not agreeing as he thinks that you are too young for this role,” she explained. According to Kangana, Chitrangada Singh was then considered for the role, and it seemed like the opportunity had slipped through her fingers. “Anurag even said that Chitrangada has been cast for my role,” she shared. However, fate had different plans. “But then Chitrangada, for whatever reasons, was not picking up the phone, so the role ended up in my bag,” Kangana added with a smile.

The success of Gangster and Kangana’s rise

Gangster, which also starred Shiney Ahuja and Emraan Hashmi, turned out to be a surprise hit, marking a significant turning point in Kangana’s career. Directed by Anurag Basu, the film not only launched Kangana into stardom but also earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Reflecting on her journey post-Gangster, Kangana went on to star in notable films such as Woh Lamhe (2006) and Life in a… Metro (2007). Her performance in Fashion (2008), directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, won her a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress, solidifying her position as a powerful actor in the industry.
