The Karaikal Federation of Government Employees’ Unions has demanded immediate regularisation of drivers and conductors employed on contract by the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation (PRTC), many of whom have been in service for over a decade.

In a statement, M. Sheik Alavudeen, general secretary of the Federation, criticised the administration for its prolonged inaction. He said despite multiple protests — including an indefinite hunger strike last year — the workers’ demands remain unaddressed. During the 2023 protest, the then General Manager (Administration) of PRTC had assured union representatives that steps would be taken towards regularisation. The workers suspended their strike based on this assurance, but concrete action has not been taken.

The federation condemned the recruitment of new temporary staff while the claims of long-serving contractual employees continue to be ignored. It alleged that the PRTC had failed to comply with labour department guidelines, including the provision of minimum wages.

Mr. Alavudeen urged the Puducherry Chief Minister to intervene in the matter, safeguard the livelihoods of workers, and ensure the protection of their rights through regularisation.
