NEW DELHI: Taking a dig at Congress, vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar on Wednesday said the architect of the Constitution of India, Bhimrao Ambedkar was conferred the Bharat Ratna too late. He should have been given the award in his lifetime, and so should have been socialist leader and former Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur, he added.
Speaking at the launch of ‘Hamara Samvidhan, Hamara Samman’ campaign here to commemorate 75th year of India as a republic, the VP echoed the sentiments of law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who said finally justice has been done to Karpoori Thakur.
Calling the Emergency the darkest period in India’s history, the VP said when fundamental rights were suspended and opposition leaders and people were put behind bars, unfortunately the top judiciary failed to uphold the rights of the people. Some of these leaders who were jailed went on to become PMs, Dhankhar said.
The VP also launched the Nyaya Setu, a digital application through which the Centre aims to deliver justice at the doorstep of people with free legal advice and services. Meghwal, attorney general R Venkataramani and IGNOU vice-chancellor Nageshwar Rao were among the dignitaries who attended the event.
His attack on Congress was apparent as Ambedkar was conferred Bharat Ratna after 21 other recipients.
