THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A video of a retired nurse conducting an awareness session about the harmful effects of excessive use of antibiotics inside a moving train while returning from Mookambika has gone viral. Health minister Veena George congratulated nurse Pulomaja of Haripad for her efforts.
On her journey from Mangaluru railway station, Pulomaja met some teachers.
After dinner, while chatting with everyone, she expressed her desire to share a health-related topic, which garnered interest.
“The session took place on Maveli Express on Dec 19 night. We were returning after having darshan at Mookambika. When I introduced myself to fellow passengers, I said I have a word of caution regarding health. I said if all are interested, I can describe it. The passengers were interested, and I started speaking,” said Pulomaja, who retired as govt nurse after 31 years of service.
“I chose antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as it is a relevant issue. Other passengers and the TTE also joined to learn more,” she said.
“They were surprised to learn that antibiotics are only effective against bacterial infections. Those listening took photos and videos, which then went viral on social media,” she added.
After seeing the video, minister George spoke to the retired nurse. “Pulomaja talks about AMR, and the threat of resistance that germs develop against antibiotics. Dedication, sincerity, love for the work, social commitment, Pulomaja’s work is touching. Let us share pride and joy,” said George.
Pulomaja said that the minister congratulated her and enquired in detail about the journey and the circumstances that led to the session. “Hearing that the video brought tears to madam’s eyes surprised me and filled me with pride. The minister has promised to meet me in person,” she said.
Pulomaja received the state award for the best nurse in 2007.
The health department sought her service even after retirement. She is now working as a One Health district mentor in Alappuzha, providing training to healthcare workers and also conducting awareness classes.
She is involved in creating awareness about the dangers of overusing antibiotics, as part of the Antibiotic Literacy Kerala initiative. Pulomaja had taken two days off to visit Mookambika and Udupi temples.
