Cody Rhodes won the Undisputed WWE Championship at Saturday Night’s Main Event, however, after the program ended Kevin Owens got the last laugh with a brutal post-match beating that left Rhodes in the hospital.

Rhodes vs. Owens II: WWE Eyes These Events For A Blockbuster Rematch

On Sunday, WWE said that Rhodes had experienced cervical enlargement and was being monitored overnight at a nearby hospital in Long Island, New York. Although X-rays showed no signs of a fracture, Rhodes was formally diagnosed with cervical strain with spasm and axial compression of the cervical spine.
It makes sense that losing two significant title fights would push a typical contender to the back of the line. Kevin Owens, however, is not your typical opponent. Even though he lost to Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes once more at Saturday Night’s Main Event, Owens created a lot of buzz by attacking Rhodes viciously after the show and then getting into a violent argument with Triple H, the WWE chief content officer. Sufficient noise caused the discussion to shift from “if” Owens can win another title to “when.”
During the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer affirmed that Owens and Rhodes would rematch. Meltzer theorized that the match was being considered for two large shows that WWE would be staging in early 2025, but he did not know when it would happen. The Royal Rumble on February 1 would be the second, while the first would be “Raw’s” Netflix premiere on January 6.
A third Rhodes-Owens match would make sense in both cases. With numerous significant fights already speculated or confirmed, including CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns vs. Solo Sikoa, WWE has made a significant effort to make their first Netflix broadcast a huge event.
Meltzer hypothesized that Rhodes vs. Owens wouldn’t be necessary because Raw’s Netflix launch would already be significant enough because of those fights.

In addition to providing the PLE with a high-profile World Title match to accompany the Men’s and Women’s Rumble events, it would make the Rumble the perfect venue for the match. After losing to Roman Reigns in 2023 and 2021, it would also be Owens’ third attempt to capture a World Championship at the Rumble in five years.
