SRINAGAR: A suspected terrorist identified as Adil Manzoor Langoo was arrested Tuesday for his alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of two men from Punjab on Feb 7 in Srinagar, marking Kashmir valley’s first targeted killing of non-natives this year.
“Many suspects were picked up and clinching evidence led to the arrest of Langoo, who on the directions of a Pakistani handler had carried out attacks in Srinagar,” Kashmir zone IG VK Bhirdi said.
Amritpal Singh, 31, and Rohit Masih, 27, were shot with an AK-47 assault rifle at close range while they were en route to their rented accommodation in Shaheed Gunj locality. Both men were from Chamiyari village near Amritsar. Amritpal, a carpenter who also sold dry fruits at Habba Kadal in Srinagar’s old quarters, died instantly. Rohit, a painter, passed away in hospital on Feb 8.
Initial suspicions pointed towards terrorists affiliated with The Resistance Force (TRF), a covert arm of Pakistan-backed LeT. According to ADG (law and order) Vijay Kumar, about 25 local terrorists are currently active in Kashmir, with approximately 30 foreign terrorists also present in the region.
Kumar said police will punish terrorist handlers who are Kashmiris residing in Pakistan. “Their properties are being seized. They are hiring locals here to carry out terrorist activities.”
Langoo, who is from Zaldagar in Srinagar, was reportedly in contact with his handler in Pakistan through social media. ADG Kumar urged parents and teachers to monitor their children’s social media usage closely.
