Kumar Sanu, the prolific singer who has already recorded in 26 languages, including Spanish, now renders ‘Nine to five’ in both English (for the first time!) and Hindi in a single releasing globally on July 12. For Sanu, there is sentiment attached as well: his daughter, Shannon K., is his co-singer and the song has words and music by his younger daughter, Annabelle, who happens to be studying Law abroad.

Sanu, phenomenally busy during the 1990s and early milennium, recently sang for two web series, Guns & Gulaabs and CA Topper Tribhuvan Mishra. He has recorded seven songs for an album named ‘Dua’ and a song composed by Arijit Singh. Last year, he also recorded a song with Sunidhi Chauhan and Raftaar composed by Payal Dev.
Shannon K. was born in India, raised in London, and now resides in Los Angeles. She has studied music at the AB-Royal School of Music. She made her debut as actor with The Big Feed and is now working in the American drama series, Mystical Inheritance of Adina Hassan, and a short film, Rolling, based on mental health.
Her debut single, ‘A long time’ was produced by four-time Grammy winner Poo Bear (Justin Bieber) in 2018 and was well-received. Shannon has collaborated on the anti-bullying track ‘Give me your hand’ with David Arquette and Ed Westwick, with music by Kyle Townsend. This song won the Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Original Song. She has received several accolades, including the Dr. Ambedkar Award, London Rolling Film Festival honours and recognition as Artiste of the Month at the World Film Festival and B4U Music UK.
In India, she has collaborated earlier with Himesh Reshammiya, Neeraj Sridhar, Shaan and Sonu Nigam besides her dad. And she is heavily influenced by Sanu and has learnt from him.
Laughed Sanu, “But this time with ‘Nine to five’, it is both my daughters, who are my gurus, as they have taught me the nuances of how to sing in English! Annabelle has also created a lot of Shannon’s songs as well, all of which can be heard on my YouTube channel, The Kumar Sanu Official.”
And while the proud father raves about how his daughter has made it on her own steam, that too abroad, without using his name, Shannon is also amazed at her dad’s versatility. As she puts it, “I guess as I have grown up outside India, I connect more with the music of Mariah Carey and other Western musicians and do not get enough time to connect with Indian music, though I am not unfamiliar with it. But I am amazed at my father’s adaptability. He is my inspiration.”
