To take agricultural innovations directly to farmers, the Kannur Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) launched its outreach initiative ‘KVK on Wheels’ at Panniyur on Friday (April 11). The mobile agricultural extension service, supported by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), aims to deliver quality inputs and crop management knowledge to farming communities across the district.

Flagged off by block panchayat president C.M. Krishnan, the project will facilitate the timely availability of seeds, planting materials, biofertilisers, micronutrients, pest control products, and value-added farm goods at the grassroots level. It also promotes scientific production techniques developed by Kerala Agricultural University and ICAR institutions.

The mobile unit will operate on a block-wise schedule, allowing farmers access to both products and printed guides on specialised crop management practices. “The initiative bridges the gap between agricultural research and field application,” said P. Jayaraj, programme coordinator at KVK, who outlined the project at the launch event.

In addition, demonstration gardens have been proposed in every block under the guidance of agricultural production companies. The model farms will help tackle commercial farming challenges and support the establishment of block-level knowledge centres.

‘KVK on Wheels’ is expected to bolster farm productivity and income in the district through greater adoption of scientific and sustainable methods.
