MUMBAI: The state on Monday said that 29 people have been detected with the new JN.1 variant of coronavirus. The highest registered cases of the variant are in Pune district (15), followed by five in Thane and three in Beed. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar reported two cases, while Kolhapur, Akola, Sindhudurg and Nashik have registered one case each. Mumbai has not registered any cases of the variant yet.
After a few days of reporting 100-plus daily cases, the state on Monday registered 70 fresh cases. However, the drop was mainly due to fewer tests being carried out on Sunday. Around 3400 tests were carried out. State officials said the daily positivity rate was 2.09%. The count of active cases touched 731, with 42 people in hospitals and nine in ICUs. Incidentally, Thane district has the highest active cases currently (212), followed by Mumbai (130) and Pune (124).
Dheeraj Kumar, commissioner of state health services, said that most hospitalizations occurred in individuals with comorbidities. Some detections were incidental. “We are not witnessing a sharp increase; similar spikes in Covid cases occurred intermittently last year. We anticipate a decline in cases in a few weeks,” he said. However, he emphasized that older individuals and those with underlying health conditions should adhere to precautions like wearing masks and maintaining better hand hygiene.
