Cash-For-Query Case: Mahua Moitra, who was expelled from Lok Sabha last month, has reportedly vacated her Delhi bungalow after she received an eviction notice.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mahua Moitra, who was expelled from Lok Sabha last month following cash-for-query allegations, has reportedly vacated her Delhi bungalow on Friday after she received an eviction notice. The development came a day after the Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to interfere with the eviction notices of the Directorate of Estate to Moitra asking her to vacate the government bungalow which was allotted to her.

In a strongly-worded eviction notice to the TMC leader on Tuesday, she was asked to “immediately” vacate her government bungalow. The Directorate of Estates notice stated that if Moitra does not vacate the premises on her own, she and any other occupant “are liable to be evicted from the said premises, if need be, by the use of such force as may be necessary”.

The Directorate of Estates (DoE) served an eviction notice to Moitra after the former MP was unable to give a satisfactory answer as to why she should be allowed to continue staying in the government bungalow.

Mahua Moitra was found guilty in the cash-for-query case, following which she was expelled from Lok Sabha on December 8, 2023 for allegedly accepting gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani.

No Relief From Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to grant relief to the TMC leader and expelled MP Mahua Moitra by denying the stay on the operation of eviction of the government bungalow. Moitra had challenged the eviction order and sought a stay.

Justice Girish Kathpaliya dismissed the interim application seeking a stay of operation of the eviction order of January 16, 2024.

“The petitioner having been allotted the government accommodation incidental to her status as a Member of Parliament and that status having ceased upon her expulsion, which expulsion has not been stayed by the Supreme Court despite hearing afforded to her, presently she has no right to continue in the said government accommodation and accordingly, under Article 226 of the Constitution of India, she cannot be granted protection as sought,” Justice Kathpaliya said in the order passed on Thursday.
