After a lot of delay, Ajay Devgn starrer Maidaan is finally releasing on Eid this year. Directed by Amit Sharma, the movie is based on the life of India’s football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, who played a major role in the nation’s victory in the 1951 Asian Games.
Maidaan vs Bade Miyan Chote Miyan: Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar have clashed 4 times before and the score is tied 2-2, But…..
Maidaan securing this release date means that it will be clashing with the Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff starrer action drama Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, which is also scheduled to release on Eid 2024.
This is not the first time that Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar would be clashing at the box office. In fact, this has happened four times in the last decade and a half. Their first clash was in 2009 when Ajay’s Rohit Shetty directorial All The Best: Fun Begins and Akshay’s Blue, which was one of the most expensive films at that time, released on the same day. All The Best won the clash handsomely by earning Rs. 41.41 crores. Blue, on the other hand, managed Rs. 38.55 crores. Although it came close to the Devgn starrer, as stated earlier, its budget was way higher.
The following year, the two actors clashed twice and that too in a span of just under two months during two major festivals – Diwali and Christmas. Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal 3 and Action Replayy, which was directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, released during Diwali where Ajay again became a runaway winner by earning Rs. 106.34 crores while Action Replay could collect only Rs. 29.06 crores.
The following month, Toonpur Ka Superhero and Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan released during Christmas. Although Tees Maar Khan didn’t become a box office success, it fared way better than Toonpur Ka Superhero by collecting Rs. 60.91 crores as against a mere Rs. 3.55 crores made by the latter. Hence, it was one all for Ajay and Akshay in that year.
Ajay and Akshay didn’t have a clash for years after 2010 until Thank God and Ram Setu released during Diwali 2022. Both the films didn’t achieve success at the box office, but Ram Setu clearly had an upper hand by earning a lifetime of Rs. 71.87 crores. Thank God, on the other hand, could manage a lifetime score of only Rs. 34.89 crores.
The upcoming major Eid clash between Ajay and Akshay is nicely poised with a score of two all. It is difficult to predict a winner between Maidaan and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan as of now as both the films have equal amount of anticipation. While Maidaan is expected to be a story of a lesser-known sports hero, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is an out-and-out masala action thriller.
Even though the scoreline is tied 2-2, the cumulative total of Ajay Devgn’s films in the clash stands at Rs. 186.19 crores whereas the cumulative total of Akshay Kumar’s films in the clash is Rs. 200.39 crores.
Only time will tell who will walk away victorious this time around.
