KANPUR: A tragic incident unfolded late Monday night in Etawah Kotwali’s Lalpura area, when a jeweller allegedly poisoned his family members, including his wife, two daughters and a son to death. The perpetrator then proceeded to the railway station, intending to end his own life, but police intervention prevented this attempt.
The authorities, including the SP City, CO, and SDM, promptly arrived to investigate the scene. A forensic team was deployed, whilst numerous onlookers gathered at the location.
The accused, Mukesh Verma, resided in Lalpura with his family: Wife Rekha (42), daughters Navya (15) and Nanni (13), and son Aadi (11).
At approximately 10 PM, he administered poison in their food. Subsequently, all four victims succumbed to the poisoning.
Following the act, Mukesh fled towards the railway station.
Neighbours, noticing the unusual situation of open doors at night, discovered the unconscious victims and alerted authorities. Police apprehended Mukesh near Ramnagar crossing, where he reportedly admitted to the crimes.
The incident caused significant distress in neighbouring areas.
Officials including SP City Abhaynath Tripathi, CO City Amit Kumar Singh and SDM Vikram Raghav conducted investigations alongside the forensic team.
Mukesh’s occupation involved gold trading in Delhi, necessitating regular travel every 8-10 days. His elder daughter Navya, studying in Delhi, had returned home for Diwali, while Kavya was completing her XIIth grade studies.
Investigations revealed Mukesh’s previous marriage history. His first wife passed away two years after marriage, leaving behind Navya, whilst the other children were from his second marriage. Post-incident, Mukesh contacted emergency services (112) claiming his family had taken their own lives, before becoming unreachable.
The accused has been detained for questioning following his arrest near the railway station, where he had intended to take his own life after poisoning his family members.
