A fire broke out early on Sunday morning at a godown near Ernakulam South overbridge where scrap materials were being stored, disrupting train services in the Ernakulam-Alappuzha route for over an hour.

Over a dozen fire tenders from different parts of the city battled for around four hours to douse the fire.

Workers who were trapped inside the godown were rescued, while residents and others from nearby buildings were evacuated to safety as a precautionary measure.

The intensity of the fire was exacerbated by LPG cylinders stored inside the godown exploding, officials said.

“The city police team on night patrol alerted us, and multiple units were immediately deployed to the site. The situation is now fully under control,” said a senior fire official.

Kochi City police said the cause of the fire is yet to be determined and an investigation is underway. In another fire at the parking area of an apartment building near Kochi International Airport, a car and four motorcycles were gutted.

Officials said no casualties were reported in connection with the incident.
