The Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation (RMC) has proposed to develop a Med City (Medical City) in 50 acres of land near the airport. It is also trying to convince the existing hospitals to move out of the city in a phased manner.
Nearly 250 hospitals and clinics are located in the Danavaipeta area alone in Rajamahendravaram, posing various challenges to the vehicular movements, particularly ambulance services and the operation of the emergency health services.
On April 17, the maiden talks on the proposed Medi City were held with the representatives of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Rajamahendravaram Chapter, and the managements of hospitals under the aegis of Municipal Commissioner Ketan Garg.
“The IMA has been briefed about the proposal to develop a Med City. It has also been asked to come up with its requirements and feasibility to move out of the existing locations of the hospitals and clinics,” Mr. Garg said in an official release.
Urban planning
RMC City Planner S. Kottayya told The Hindu, “The IMA is expected to share its idea and requirement of infrastructure facilities in the feasibility report. It will also list out the challenges for the proposed Med City. The proposed project is likely to come up near the airport.”
“The Med City proposal is part of the urban planning of the city. However, another round of talks will be held in May. The proposal is being designed to meet the needs of those planning the expansion of the existing hospitals and setting up new ones,” said Mr. Kottayya.
Rajamahendravaram Urban Development Authority Chief Planning Officer G.V.V.S.N. Murthy and other officials took part in the talks. Dr. Datla Satish, Dr. Durga Prasad, Dr. Kandula Sumant represented the Indiam Medical Association.
