A Bharatiya Janata Party leader from Meghalaya has asked the State government to name a viewpoint after Raja Raghuvanshi, the businessman from Indore who was killed during his honeymoon trip to Sohra on May 23.

In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma through the state’s Tourism Minister, Paul Lyngdoh, BJP leader James Syiemiong stated that the ‘Raja Memorial Viewpoint’ would serve as a symbolic landmark for tourism and awareness in Sohra, one of the world’s wettest places.

The Chief Minister heads the National People’s Party, which governs Meghalaya in coalition with allies, including the BJP.

Mr. Syiemiong, a former district president of the BJP, said the viewpoint in Raja’s memory should be at or near the location associated with the honeymoon tragedy.

“This memorial will not only honour the victims and their families but also serve as a tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all parts of India who wish to pay tribute. The memorial viewpoint can become a civic education site promoting public awareness on women’s safety, tourist security, and moral responsibility,” he wrote.

Mr. Syiemiong said the “emotional” landmark would be akin to the legacy of Nohkalikai Falls, associated with a fabled woman named Likai who jumped to her death. Nohkalikai is not far from the Weisawdong Falls, near where Raja’s decomposed body was found.

The BJP leader also proposed a Pledge Wall for visitors to commit to the values of safety and justice.
