The Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (KCMMF), popularly known as Milma, is in talks with international business networks to export its high-value dairy products to the U.S. and Europe.

Milma Chairman K.S. Mani said the milk cooperative was exploring the export potential of its long-shelf-life products, such as clarified butter (ghee) and milk powder, from its recently inaugurated plant at Moorkanad in Malappuram district.

Mr. Mani said on Monday that Milma was looking at a comparatively large portfolio of products with export potential and that the milk cooperative would be able to export the products when the present round of negotiations was completed. He added that the agencies involved in exploring the export market with Milma were expected to visit the units soon.

Milma has tasted success in exporting clarified butter to West Asia. Ghee is being shipped from all regions of the State-wide cooperative, which sells around 16 lakh litres of milk daily.  Expanding exports to the U.S. and Europe would be a major milestone as Milma works to reposition itself and standardise its products, quality, packaging, design, and pricing.

Milma is one of the most successful cooperatives in the State, with around 10 lakh registered farmers under its fold. Around three lakh dairy farmers sell milk to the cooperative. It also sells a wide range of value-added products, including curd, butter, cheese, paneer, ice cream, flavoured milk drinks, yoghurt, and ghee.
