MUMBAI: A police inspector from the Kherwadi police station lost Rs 5 lakhs after falling victim to a Know Your Customer (KYC) fraud while on duty in his office cabin on Wednesday. The scamster called the inspector, SG Hemant (51) and informed him that his banking savings account would get blocked for not updating his KYC.
Kherwadi police registered a first information report (FIR) against two mobile number users which was used to make calls to the inspector at around 1 pm after he was made to download an app (apk.file). The cop followed the scamster instructions as he did not want to default on the housing loan equated monthly installment (EMI), which was deducted from his banking account.
After the inspector saved the app on his mobile, the scamster gained remote access and stole his banking details. Subsequently, Rs 5 lakhs were siphoned through two transactions: Rs 1.11 lakhs and Rs 3.89 lakhs, withdrawn from his two bank accounts.
“When Hemant learned that he was duped he immediately called the National Cyber Portal helpline no: 1930 and registered an online case before registering the FIR so that the account to which the money got credited could be blocked,” said a police officer of the Kherwadi police station.
Inspector Hemant, who was on day duty at Kherwadi police station received a call at around 1 pm from a person claiming to be a telecaller from Axis Bank and informed that his KYC was not updated due to which his account was kept on hold before deactivation. The cop confirmed TOI about the fraud and said the team is working on the same matter.
In the complaint, Hemant said: “I got scared when the person told me my account will be blocked as KYC is not updated. As my housing loan EMI was due I was taken back and without realising I followed the scamster instructions before realising that I was duped.”
After downloading the remote access app, scamster asked Hemant to enter details related to his debit card, PAN card, and Date of Birth. “After entering the details, the scamster asked him to dial ‘401’ and asked to forward a mobile number to customer service to update the KYC. Later the scamster told Hemant that KYC is still pending and he informed him that he would make a WhatsApp Video call and demanded more information about the banking details when he started receiving multiple one-time passwords (OTP) and soon the call got disconnected,” said a police officer.
