NEW DELHI: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has taken steps to secure more water to meet the city’s growing demands. Officials report that a consultant has been appointed to identify new water sources as the population continues to rise.
An expert committee, headed by Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde, has been formed to explore viable options for increasing water availability. The civic body announced, “The commissioner has forwarded proposals to the Konkan Irrigation Development Corporation to address the city’s increasing water needs.”
Currently, Navi Mumbai receives about 450 million liters of water daily from the Morbe dam. However, major infrastructure projects like the Navi Mumbai international airport and several housing schemes could strain this supply. Projections indicate that the population might reach 4.42 million by 2055, which could make the current water supply insufficient.
Recognizing the urgency, the NMMC has engaged a preliminary consultant through a tender process. This consultant will address the challenges of new water resource projects, including environmental, feasibility, and legal and financial aspects.
One recommendation from the expert committee is to utilize wastewater from the Patalganga River and the Tata Power Generation Station at Bhira to help meet the city’s water needs, the release stated.
