‘Nehru Became PM’: Amit Shah Blames Congress Leadership, Appeasement Politics For PartitionThe Muslims of undivided India did not want a partition, while the Congress leaders of the time and their appeasement tactics are responsible for the split, union home minister Amit Shah said at the CNN-News18 Rising Bharat Summit 2025 in Delhi on Wednesday, concurring with similar comments made on the platform by Prime Minister Narendra Modi a day earlier.

“The Muslim League lost the provincial elections of 1946 even in areas that later became Pakistan,” he pointed out. “The Muslim populace of the time was not in favour of a division. And Modiji is right when he says that Congress leaders of the time are responsible for the country’s partition, their policy of appeasement is responsible for the country’s partition.”

When asked which leader in the Congress was responsible for the partition, Shah said, “It would be very difficult to single out a leader. Congress later made Jawaharlal Nehru the prime minister. Whoever takes the decision becomes the PM. Our topmost leader is Modi ji, so he became the PM. Congress made Nehru ji the PM then.”

At the summit, PM Modi on Tuesday addressed the idea of India’s partition, stating that it did not originate from ordinary Muslim families but from “some fundamentalists, who were nourished by some Congress leaders, so that they could become the sole claimants of power”.

Amit Shah also made an appeal to India’s youth. “If needed, tolerate everything else. But never tolerate this poisonous scab of appeasement that the young generation must uproot and throw out of the country forever,” said the minister.

The senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader also said that anyone following the policy of appeasement is working against the interests of the country.
