Constitution Debate Rajya Sabha: Amit Shah lashed out at Congress for carrying forward colonial mindset in independent India and said that Jawaharlal Nehru refused to name the country only ‘Bharat’.

Constitution Debate Rajya Sabha: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on Congress for carrying forward the colonial mindset, stating it was due to this that they refused to name the country only as ‘Bharat’.
Shah said, on the contrary, the Narendra Modi government is shedding all signs of colonialism and developing the country, taking the nation’s rich and old
heritage
along.
What Did Amit Shah Say?
His remarks came while addressing the Rajya Sabha during the Constitution Debate.
“Then member Seth Govind Das urged to give the country the name Bharat. Nehru said that there is no need to look back, look at the future. Two names were given to the country — India and Bharat. It is about vision. If you see the country with the spectacle of India, you will not understand Bharat in your entire life,” Shah said.
He took a dig at the Opposition for naming their grand alliance after the country and said that they named it INDIA as they were moving forward with the same mindset.
“This is why, they (Opposition) have kept the name of their alliance as INDIA. They are moving with the same thought,” he said.
Amit Shah Lists Modi Govt’s Moves To Shed Colonial Signs
“But for PM Modi, we do have to move forward towards development, but we have to take the
heritage
along. We want to shed all signs of slavery. We are not ashamed of our old
heritage
,” the Home Minister highlighted.
Listing out the moves taken by the Modi government to shed colonial signs, Shah said that the Rajpath was changed to the Kartavya Path, and a statue of Subhash Chandra Bose was installed near India Gate.
“Rajpath, which was named after a British ruler, was changed to Kartavya Path by PM Modi. At India Gate, there was a statue of King George V, the statue was removed. The space was vacant, we installed the statue of Subhash Chandra Bose,” he said.
