Kolkata: Bengal opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday urged the Election Commission to act against the state DGP, East Midnapore SP, Contai SDPO and Bhupatinagar OC over the attack by villagers on NIA officers.
Adhikari said that law and order had crumbled completely and since the control was now with the EC, it was high time that the commission took proper action against the police officers.“It is due to Mamata Banerjee’s repeated instigation that even after ED officials were attacked in Sandeshkhali, Trinamool still dared to attack NIA officials. She recently spoke ill about NIA at a political event in Cooch Behar’s Mathabhanga,” Adhikari claimed.
Countering the allegations, state minister Bratya Basu said: “CBI, ED I-T, now late addition NIA… we are losing patience now. We have written (to the EC) that 10 MPs want to meet the EC. The manner in which a central agency is being misused… the EC needs to ensure a level-playing field. This is selective targeting of the opposition. We have been patient enough. But patience cannot be taken for granted.”
Sukanta Majumdar, BJP’s Bengal chief, took to X to express his “shock” over the incident. “Under Mamata Banerjee’s misrule, WB remains lawless. Following an attack on ED officials, now NIA officers faced violence in Bhupatinagar while trying to arrest two TMC leaders. Local police involvement is suspected, highlighting criminal protection under TMC in Bengal.”
CPM’s Samik Lahiri claimed that the incident was a result of BJP and TMC walking hand-in-hand before the elections. “After ED officers were attacked in Sandeshkhali, they did nothing for 19 days before tamely putting up a notice on main accused Shahjahan’s residence. These are governments where criminals thrive,” he said.
A BJP delegation led by Sisir Bajoria submitted a memorandum to state chief electoral officer Aariz Aftab and demanded the removal of police officers “for their alliance with the party in office”. The team demanded posting of central force personnel in all booths.
Bengal governor C V Ananda Bose described the assault on NIA as a “deplorable trend that should be put down with an iron hand”.
