PATNA: About a week after he formed the NDA govt in Bihar on Jan 28, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar distributed portfolios among the eight ministers on Saturday while retaining the key portfolios of home, general administration, cabinet secretariat, vigilance and election departments.
As in his previous NDA govt (before Grand Alliance), ministers from BJP’s quota got the finance, commercial taxes, urban development & housing department, health, industry, animal husbandry and fisheries and law departments.
Eight ministers, apart from the chief minister , had taken oath on Jan 28.
As per reports, their number could go up to 36 after a cabinet expansion.
JD(U) has kept 19 departments while 23 departments have gone to ally BJP. HAM(S) chief Santosh Kumar Suman has been given the IT and SC/ST welfare departments whereas Independent MLA Sumit Kumar Singh will be minister of science, technology and technical education department.
BJP is the largest party in Bihar’s NDA govt with 78 MLAs, followed by JD(U) with 45 and four from HAM(S), founded by Suman’s father, former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi.
Of the top 10 departments in the matter of budgetary allocations, six have gone to JD(U) — education, rural development, home, rural works, energy and social welfare. Health, panchayati raj, UDHD and road construction have been allocated to BJP.
A total of 18 departments have been distributed among the two deputy CMs — Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha of BJP. Samrat has been given finance, commercial taxes, UDHD, health, sports, panchayati raj, industry, animal husbandry and fisheries and law. Sinha will hold agriculture, road construction, revenue and land reforms, sugar cane, mines and geology, labour resources, arts, culture & youth, minor irrigation and PHED.
Another BJP minister, Prem Kumar, has got cooperatives, OBC and EBC welfare, disaster management, environment, forests and climate change and tourism.
