SHAMLI: Five men from Haryana, returning home via UP after a holy dip in Haridwar, allegedly clashed with an eatery owner in Shamli who sold vegetarian and non-vegetarian biryani at the same place. The men alleged they had avoided several vendors along the route selling non-veg biryani and chose a stall marked ‘veg biryani’.
Upon seeing non-veg biryani being cooked there, they got into a heated argument with the seller. They accused the vendor of using the same utensils for cooking, sparking the brawl, a purported video of which surfaced on social media. In the clip, one man is heard saying they bought the dish after seeing the ‘board’, but were served biryani with chicken instead.
Shamli ASP, Santosh Kumar, said on Monday, “The incident took place at Shamli’s Kandhla on Sunday evening. No formal complaint has been filed so far, but police initiated action against the vendor for disturbing peace and harmony under BNS section 170 (equivalent to CrPC section 151). Matter is being investigated, and action will be taken based on the findings.”
An official involved in the investigation added, “Anuj Tyagi, 38, of Samalkha in Panipat along with four friends stopped his car at Mohd Tanveer’s stall in Kandhla to buy veg biryani when the incident happened.”
Kandhla SHO Devendra Sharma, meanwhile, said, “During the yatra, Tanveer, the vendor, sold veg biryani under a particular board which he perhaps didn’t remove. Once the ‘ban’ was lifted, he started offering veg and non-vegetarian biryani at the same stall, which led to the disturbance.”
