BAREILLY: Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan‘s son Abdullah Azam, who is serving a seven-year prison term in two fake birth certificate cases, claimed before the MP/MLA court in Rampur on Wednesday that Hardoi jail administration was making him “sleep on moist floor and providing cold water for bath despite freezing conditions”. “It is becoming difficult to bear all this,” he added. The court called for a report from the jail administration and gave orders to provide the ex-MLA of Suar “facilities as per jail manual”.
Superintendent of Hardoi district jail, Satish Chandra Tripathi, told TOI on Thursday that Abdullah’s allegations were “baseless”. Tripathi said, “The floor on which about 1,200 inmates sleep is made of plaster and a carpet is laid on it. Every inmate is provided with three blankets and they use it to save themselves from cold. We’re providing fresh tubewell water supply for taking bath during the day. The facilities are all provided as per the jail manual and it can be inspected anytime. We’ll provide our report to the Rampur court with the details.”
Abdullah was produced in the court of special MP/MLA judge Shobhit Bansal in Rampur to record his statement in a passport fraud case. Prosecuting counsel Amarnath Tiwari meanwhile said, “Abdullah had recorded his statement in the passport case but I’m not aware if he had made any complaint against the jail administration. The next hearing in this case is January 18.”
Virendra Goyal, the SP district president, said, “The situation is not good in Rampur. Our party’s office was sealed and our members were framed in false cases.”
Abdullah and his parents were convicted for submitting fake date of birth certificates and awarded a seven-year jail term on October 18 last year. Azam had earlier said that “he and his family are in danger and they can be killed in an encounter.”
