NEW DELHI: Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and dancer-actor Vyjayantimala Bali are among the five indivuals honoured with the Padma Vibhushan award, the Centre announced on Thursday.
South superstar Chiranjeevi, late social worker & founder of Sulabh International Bindeshwar Pathak and dancer Padma Subrahmanyam have also been conferred with India’s second-highest civilian honour.
Meanwhile, as many as 17 people were honoured with the Padma Bhushan award, including Mithun Chakraborty (actor), Usha Uthup (singer), Ram Naik (governor), late M Fathima Beevi (first woman SC judge) and Hormusji N Cama (Bombay Samachar owner), Young Liu (Foxconn chairman), among others.The Centre also announced the list of 117 Padma Shri awardees this year, which includes the names of tennis player Rohan Bopanna, philanthropist Kiran Nadar, former Hockey player Harbinder Singh, among others.
According to this year’s list, as many as 30 of the awardees are women. The list also includes 8 individuals from the category of foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and 9 Posthumous awardees.
Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian awards of the country, are conferred in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The awards are conferred by the President at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan around March-April every year.
