Lok Sabha Speaker Elections: NDA nominee Om Birla was elected as the Lok Sabha speaker on Wednesday for the second time and remembered the “dark days of Emergency” in his first address to the House.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Birla for his condemnation of the Emergency and said it was a wonderful gesture to stand in silence in honour of all those who suffered during those days.

A large number of MPs stood in silence for a few moments amid protests by Congress MPs and some other opposition members.

Earlier in the day, PM congratulated Om Birla on his re-election expressing confidence that he will guide parliamentarians and play a big role in the House fulfilling people’s expectations.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi was also felicitated by Congress MPs for being appointed as the Leader of the Opposition. In his Lok Sabha address, Gandhi also congratulated Speaker Birla and said he hopes the opposition leaders will be allowed to speak in the House this term.
