VILLUPURAM: PMK’s governing council, which met at the residence of party founder S Ramadoss at Thailapuram on Thursday, decided to take a call on contesting the Vikravandi bypoll after consulting the leaders of the alliance parties.
The party faced the recent Lok Sabha polls in alliance with BJP and AMMK but fared poorly, like its partners, losing all the seats it contested. The party’s Dharmapuri candidate and party president and Rajya Sabha MP Anbumani Ramadoss’s wife Sowmiya Anbumani lost the polls by around 21,000 votes.
The party’s governing council met on Thursday after the Election Commission of India announced the date for the bypoll to Vikravandi assembly seat in Villupuram district. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Anbumani said the council had discussed the forthcoming bypoll to the Vikravandi assembly seat.
“We will make an announcement about our decision after consulting the leaders of the alliance parties,” he told reporters and left without taking any questions.
The seat became vacant after DMK MLA N Pugazhenthi passed away in April this year after a prolonged illness.
DMK on Tuesday announced Anniyur Siva as the candidate for the Vikravandi bypoll. Siva is the state secretary of DMK’s agricultural labourers’ wing.
