Hubballi-Dharwad Police launched a special drive against narcotics in view of the New Year celebrations.

Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar has been holding parade of drug peddlers and also addicts warning them not to indulge in any illegal activities.

He held a parade of identified addicts at the City Armed Reserved Police Grounds in Hubballi on Sunday. Known peddlers were paraded on Saturday.

He said that the twin cities police have booked cases against 806 narcotics consumers. They have been summoned to the CAR Police Grounds. Of them, 634 addicts turned out. And, the police seized 350 mobile phones from them.

He said that all-out effort is being made to curb drug trade in Hubballi and Dharwad. “The police have warned of stringent action against consumers, including working professionals and students, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act,” he told reporters on Sunday.

“Legal action will be initiated against those found consuming narcotics or in peddling. The youths must realise that a police case against them will land them in trouble if they are selected for a government job or those who want to travel abroad to study or work as police verification is a must to obtain a passport,” he said.

New Year celebrations should comply with laws and regulations. Any violation, particularly drug use, will be dealt with strictly, he added. Special squads have been deputed for the purpose.

The police also conducted a parade of drug peddlers at Old CAR Police Grounds on Karwar Road and warned them not to engage in such activities. More than 200 accused peddlers were present at the parade.

The police gathered information for more than 10 years about these drug peddlers supplying ganja and other narcotic substances in the twin cities. Several cases have been registered against them in various police stations.

Mr. Shashi Kumar, Deputy Commissioners of Police Mahaning Nandgavi and Raveesh C.R., Assistant Commissioners of Police and others were present.

They collected details of the peddlers such as their residential address, family members, contact numbers and bank accounts.

Mr. Kumar said that in the last 10 years, cases have been registered against 442 drug peddlers and the police have collected all of their details.

“Of them, 210 peddlers attended the parade, while 30 are in judicial custody. Another 50 are from neighbouring States and 50 have gone absconding. Ten of them died,” he said.
