NEW DELHI: King Charles III, 75, has intensified his efforts to remove his brother, Prince Andrew, from their shared residence at Royal Lodge, where Andrew resides with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, The Sun reported. Insiders have referred to the ongoing situation as the “siege of Royal Lodge.”
According to Ingrid Seward, Editor-in-Chief of Majesty Magazine, Prince Andrew’s daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, could play a crucial role in helping him maintain his residence.
She said, “The princesses are Andrew’s secret weapon. They are very popular amongst the royal family and Charles is especially fond of them. They are his passport now he has lost everything.”
Seward added that Beatrice, 35, and Eugenie, 34, are aware of their father’s contentment at Royal Lodge. She explained: “It is his home and it has been their home for many years too. Their childhood was all over the place and Royal Lodge was the one stability they had. They love their dad and want to help him if they possibly can. Their mum can’t do anything but they can.”
Sources within the palace have indicated that the King, who currently finances Andrew’s lifestyle, may “reconsider the levels of support he is willing to provide” if Andrew continues to refuse offers of alternative accommodation. The Sun previously reported that Andrew had declined the opportunity to relocate to Frogmore Cottage last year, following the eviction of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
The 64-year-old Duke of York, who will never return to public duty due to his involvement in the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking scandal, has been resisting the King’s requests to vacate the property for the past 18 months, the report said. Andrew maintains his position, citing his 75-year lease on the property.
A friend of Andrew told The Times: “It can be done tidily or untidily. It can be done with grace and dignity or it can be forced upon him. It’s all rather sad. But as things stand, life at Royal Lodge is set to become increasingly cold and uncomfortable for the duke. The only question now is when he will realise that he has become a prisoner of his own pride – and that handing back the keys will afford him far greater comfort, and the continued support of his family.”
The situation persists as Charles is reportedly unwilling to continue personally funding Andrew’s extravagant lifestyle. Sources close to the monarch suggest that he may be compelled to “reconsider the levels of support he is willing to provide” if the “siege of Royal Lodge” persists.
The disgraced Duke’s police protection was revoked when he stepped down from public duty amidst the Epstein scandal. However, Charles intervened to cover his multi-million pound private security expenses.
The crisis shows no signs of abating, particularly after Netflix aired its popular drama “Scoop,” which portrays Andrew’s infamous “car crash” interview on Newsnight.
