NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha on Monday witnessed a ruckus over “question number 18” as some members protested when the query related to the aviation sector got “skipped inadvertently” with deputy chairman Harivansh officiating.
Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped in to clarify that it was inadvertent and a result of a technical glitch and took up the question for discussion. He also made it known to the House it felt “slightly hurtful” when some references were made by members about the deputy chairperson Harivansh.
“He has more stunning qualities and independence than I have and respect for all members,” Dhankhar said referring to Harivansh.
It all started with Jaya Bachchan (SP), Deepender Singh Hooda (Congress), Shiv Sena (UBT) member Priyanka Chaturvedi and other opposition members rising to demand the reason for skipping question number 18 and taking up question number 19 related to Polavaram irrigation project in Andhra Pradesh.
Asking the MPs to calm down, Dhankhar, after the completion of question 19, took up question 18 related to the aviation sector and said it could not be taken up earler due to “certain technical situations”.
When SP member Jaya Bachchan rose to speak, the chairman said, “You are a senior member and even otherwise in the country whatever you say is looked up to and regarded. So, you will cheer for all of us. I am sure a great actor like you must have taken many retakes also.”
Stating that she has high regard for the deputy chairperson and not said anything about him, Bachchan said she has the right to ask questions.
