Jammu and Kashmir’s newly-elected Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hinted that he received assurances from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the restoration of statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.
“I have received assurances at the highest level that the commitments made to J&K particularly with regard to the governance model, will change,” Omar Abdullah said. “I have just come back from very successful meetings from New Delhi,” he further added.
Abdullah expressed concern over what he called “hybrid” model of governance and warned officials against exploiting it.
“I would tell you in no uncertain terms that there will be zero tolerance for this but I am also acutely aware that we have unfortunately at the moment a rather hybrid system of operating,” he further added.
“I have a feeling, and I am going to say regardless of the consequences some may feel they can exploit the system for their advantage, that they can find loopholes in this system that we have in J&K at the moment. But please rest assured. This is a temporary phase,” he said.
Abdullah was expected to hand over a resolution passed by his cabinet urging the Centre to restore the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.
In a remarkable victory in the recent assembly polls in the union territory, the first in 10 years, Abdullah’s National Conference won 42 of the 90 assembly seats.
“Once the full statehood to J&K is restored there will be no loopholes to exploit or any advantages to be taken by playing against one another,” he added.
