Minister for Transport and BC Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar and Union Minister for Coals and Mines G. Kishan Reddy on Saturday inaugurated the ground level storage reservoir at SPR Hills in Jubilee Hills Constituency. The three-million-litre capacity reservoir built at a cost of ₹5.70 crore will address the drinking water needs of 52 bastis in Borabanda and Rahmathnagar areas.
Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy said that the high-altitude areas had been facing issues, with colonies reporting low pressure and supply during the night and even no supply of water for up to three days sometimes. The reservoir will now resolve all those issues and ensure supply of water every alternate day, he said.
Recalling the agitations for regular water supply by the residents of Borabanda and Rahmathnagar, Mr. Kishan Reddy congratulated them and noted that Hyderabad as a rapidly growing city needs more water. However, he observed that there had been no new allocation of water supply to the city in the last 10 years.
Claiming that the number of connections has been on the rise because of the extension of Outer Ring Road, Mr. Prabhakar said that the tender process to source 20TMC water at a cost of about ₹7,000 crore was completed.
According to the water board, the city gets 555 million gallons per day supply for a population of nearly 1.5 crore. “The government has given permissions for Godavari phase 2 project, the tender stage has been completed too, and soon construction work will begin. This project, when completed, can bring 20TMC additional water supply to the city’s needs – which will ensure supply plans for the next 30 years,” Mr. Ashok Reddy informed.
