HYDERABAD: 64-year-old Periyati Sridharan, retired as a Gunner from the Indian Army who was accused of abducting a teen and raping her at Secunderabad in July 2017, has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for twenty years, by B Pushpalatha, Special Sessions Judge for POCSO cases, Hyderabad. The Judge also awarded Rs 5 lakh compensation to the survivor, who is currently pursuing her graduation.
During the trial, the girl detailed how she was abducted and raped.The evidence of the supervisor of the care home where she stayed, corroborated with her witness and the medical evidence proved that she was sexually assaulted.
Appreciating the evidence, the court pronounced the accused guilty of the crime and convicted him, said Additional Public Prosecutor K Prathap Reddy.
The girl, then 17, a semi orphan, used to stay in a Children home and learnt tailoring from an institute in Secunderabad. One morning in July 2017, when the girl was on her way to the tailoring institute, the accused approached her and started a conversation with her.
He also asked if she wanted to eat anything and forcefully took her with him on her bike and got her food in a nearby hotel.
Later, he took her to a hotel and raped her twice, dropped her near the Secunderabad railway station and fled. The girl first confided in the home incharge and a complaint was lodged three days later. Subsequently, the accused, a resident of Yapral was arrested.
