Riteish Deshmukh has been carving a niche for himself in the Marathi film industry after years of success in Bollywood. He made his directorial debut with Ved in 2022, which was well-received by critics. Now, the actor-director is set to helm Raja Shivaji, a film based on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In addition, he will appear in the fifth instalment of Housefull. In a recent interview, Riteish shared insights about his journey in both the Marathi and Hindi entertainment industries and how he defines success in his career.
Riteish Deshmukh opens up about his journey in Marathi and Hindi cinema; says, “I always thought my first film would be my last”
Riteish Deshmukh’s success in the Marathi film industry has been impressive. When asked about comparing his journey in regional cinema with Bollywood, he told Etimes, “Becoming an actor was never my plan; I’m an accidental actor. In fact, I always thought my first film would be my last. Everyone defines success differently. For me, success is something personal.”
Riteish Deshmukh reflected on his journey, expressing gratitude for the opportunities he had, especially as someone who grew up watching films. He mentioned working alongside renowned actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Mithun Chakraborty, Rishi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, and Salman Khan—actors he has always admired. Riteish said, “Sharing the screen with them is my definition of success. So, it doesn’t matter whether I’ve achieved great heights in Marathi cinema or performed reasonably well in Hindi. Those aren’t the metrics I measure myself against.”
Riteish Deshmukh also made his debut in the Marathi reality TV space as the host of Bigg Boss Marathi 5, replacing Mahesh Manjrekar. When asked about the season’s success, he shared, “I believe that instead of being weighed down by the success, one should take responsibility for the work you’ve taken on and do it with utmost sincerity. I realized early in my life that the outcome of your efforts is not in your hands.”
Reflecting on his early days, Riteish Deshmukh shared that his main goal as a debutant was to earn the audience’s approval. While his image as a comedy actor initially worked in his favor, it took time for him to establish himself in other genres, with films like Ek Villain, Lai Bhaari, Ved, and others helping him broaden his range.
