NEW DELHI: Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary on Saturday said protesting against Bharat Ratna being given to former PM Chaudhary Charan Singh shows the “ideological decline” of the Congress party.
The RLD chief’s remarks were against the backdrop of Congress MPs disrupting his speech praising the government for the decision.
“If you (Congress) are comparing a small election of 2024 with Chaudhary Charan Singh’s huge ideology then you are disrespecting him and his followers. You are also insulting a prestigious award like Bharat Ratna,” Jayant Chaudhary told news agency PTI.
“37 years after Chaudhary Sahab’s (Chaudhary Charan Singh) death, a government has honoured him. If they (Congress) are seeing some kind of wrong in it and some ‘negotiations’, then this shows their ideological decline,” he added.
As soon as Singh started thanking the government for the honour in Rajya Sabha, Congress members objected and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge wanted to know the rule under which the RLD leader was allowed to speak.
“There is no debate on honouring leaders with Bharat Ratna. I salute everyone. But if a member wants to raise an issue, you (chairman) ask ‘under which rule’. (I want to know) under which rule he (Jayant Singh) has been allowed to speak. Give permission to us also. On one side you talk about rule…You have discretion…that discretion should be used judiciously and not when you want…,” Kharge said, leading to a huge uproar in the House.
Chaudhary Charan Singh’s grandson further said it would be disrespectful to compare the small election of 2024 to the huge legacy of Charan Singh.
Earlier in the day, Jayant Chaudhry heaped praises on the Modi government in Rajya Sabha, saying honouring Charan Singh will institutionalise his legacy.
This move by the Indian government not only institutionalizes Charan Singh’s contributions but also serves as a morale booster, inspiring individuals to believe in their potential to overcome challenges, much like Singh himself, Jayant Singh said in Parliament earlier today.
“The decision taken to award Chaudhary Charan Singh with Bharat Ratna, it is a big decision…Yesterday, people celebrated Diwali after the announcement…Yesterday, the farmers distributed sweets in CP. This only shows that the decision was not only limited to his family members but is a decision to strengthen the farmers,” the RLD chief said in the Upper House on last day of the Budget Session.
