As the five MLC candidates will be elected unopposed under the MLAs quota, the All India Muslim-e-Ittehadul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) is all set to take the local bodies vacancy arising in May this year with the support of the Congress.

Sources said the AIMIM assured the Congress party that it would not press for the vacancy arising out of the completion of the term of its MLC Mirza Riyaz ul Hassan now along with four other BRS MLCs. The term of BRS candidate MS Prabhakar Rao elected under the Hyderabad Local Authorities Constituency will end on May 1, 2025, which the AIMIM would take.

The MIM will comfortably win this seat as it has the majority of votes, more than all other parties, and the Congress supporting its candidate it would be a cakewalk. It is presumed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) will not have an open tie-up to give a semblance of a fight given the distance they have been maintaining fearing political backlash.

The voters for the Hyderabad Local Authorities Constituency include 84 GHMC corporators, 15 MLAs and two MPs (they all are under Hyderabad district). Depending on where the two Rajya Sabha members and MLCs opted to vote, they will also come in support of the AIMIM-Congress combine.

The association of AIMIM and the Congress was visible in the recent standing committee elections of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), where both parties combined to win 15 posts. The absence of a BJP-BRS tie-up here made it easy for the AIMIM-Congress combine.

Meanwhile, the absence of a minority candidate in the Congress list has disappointed the Muslim community, who were sure of getting the nomination. But the Congress picking up Amer Ali Khan as the MLC candidate under the Governor’s quota tied its hands in the present selection where a SC, ST and a BC candidate got the opportunity.
