Last year, Bollywood witnessed two action-packed extravaganzas: Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Salman Khan’s Tiger 3. Both films not only enthralled audiences with their high-octane stunts and thrilling narratives but also showcased the expertise of Yash Raj Films’ VFX division, yFX. In a recent interview with Variety, Sherry Bharda, the head of yFX, shed light on the intricate process behind these action sequences and the invaluable contributions of the film’s leading stars.

She talked about the importance of meticulous planning and collaboration, stating, “These sequences can’t be made in a linear fashion… They all have to be fairly interactive and inclusive… Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, they are very savvy and hands-on in this process.”

Bharda explained how SRK and Salman actively participate in shaping the action sequences, providing valuable feedback even during the pre-visualization stage. This stage involves creating a simplified animated version of the final sequence, allowing for adjustments and refinements before filming.

“When the director shows them the pre-viz that we’ve done… they have their ideas, they have their thoughts, they know what they’re supposed to do on set,” Bharda said.

Bharda also highlighted the unique challenges faced during the production of Tiger 3 due to its tight schedule. To overcome these challenges, the yFX team relied heavily on 3D visualization, meticulously planning each shot on the computer before stepping onto the live set.

“The scale of it had to be even bigger than Pathaan… But given the limited time, we used extensive 3D visualization… It means actually, on the computer, animating and putting into place every shot that is eventually going to be then shot on a live stage… And we knew if we didn’t do this we would be dead in the water because there was no time for that usual ‘fix it in post’ situation, it had to all be planned from the beginning,” Bharda concluded.
