NEW DELHI: A local court has granted permission to AAP MP Sanjay Singh, who was arrested in connection with a money laundering case related to the alleged Delhi excise scam, to sign forms and documents for his Rajya Sabha renomination.
The Special Judge M K Nagpal approved this request after Singh filed an application stating that his current term as a member of the Rajya Sabha is ending on January 27.The Returning Officer issued a notice on January 2 for the election and nominations, which need to be submitted by January 9.
Singh’s application sought permission from the Tihar Jail Superintendent to allow him to sign the necessary documents. The court order, issued on Thursday, directed the jail superintendent to permit Singh’s counsel to present the documents to the jail authorities on January 6, 2024. The superintendent was instructed to ensure that Singh’s signatures are obtained on the said documents.
“It is being directed that if the documents are presented by counsel for accused before jail authorities on January 6, 2024, the jail superintendent shall ensure that the signatures of the accused are permitted to be taken on said documents and he is also permitted to meet his Counsel for half-an-hour to discuss the modalities in connection with filing of the said nomination,” the judge said in the order passed on Thursday.
Singh was arrested by the anti-money laundering agency on October 4. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has accused him of playing a significant role in the formulation and implementation of the excise policy, which has since been scrapped. The ED alleges that Singh benefited certain liquor manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers in exchange for financial gains. However, Singh has vehemently denied these allegations.
This court order comes as Singh prepares for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election and seeks to secure his renomination. The MP will now be able to sign the necessary documents and consult with his counsel regarding the nomination process.
