Filmmaker Hansal Mehta’s web show Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta story is, as per the name, based on the share market scam carried out by Harshad Mehta in the early 1990s. It saw Pratik Gandhi essay the role of Harshad Mehta and walk away with glory.

The show also saw actor Paresh Ganatra play a small but important character of Maheshwari, which was based on the real-life character of RK Dhamani, the current the owner of D Mart. In a video interview with Digital Commentary, Ganatra revealed why he was very keen on playing this character despite its short screen time.
“I used to do a job back then in 1990-91,” said Ganatra. “My salary was around Rs. 4500-5000. At that time, I faced a loss of Rs. 75000 during the Harshad Mehta scam. It was a very big amount. All my savings were wiped out. Aur kitni saving hogi aapki?”
This was enough for him to get excited to play a role in the show, irrespective of its length. He said, “When I came to know about this character; it was a small role, not a big one, I told Hansal sir that I want to do this role, come what may. He asked me, ‘It’s a small role, Paresh? Why do you want to do it?’ I said I wish to do because I have been through that era, and I was a share market guy. I used to dabble a lot in the share market. I still do; I have a lot of investment there.”
He added, “This character Maheshwari is based on RK Dhamani, who is the owner of D Mart. So, no matter how small the role was (I had to do it). I was reminded of Harshad Mehta and my losses (while doing the show).”
Ganatra also said that Hansal Mehta gives his actors the freedom to play their character the way they want.
