LUCKNOW: As most parts of the state continued to reel under a scorching heatwave on Friday, the maximum temperature in Lucknow equalled the highest mercury level in the month of June in the past seven years.
Prayagraj was the hottest in the country during the day. It also recorded the warmest June night ever in its observational history of 127 years. No relief from the heatwave is likely in the next three days.
According to Indian Meteorological Department data, in Lucknow, the maximum temperature touched 45.3 degrees Celsius, six units above normal, on Friday. This was the second hottest day of the city this summer after May 31, when mercury level reached 45.8 degrees Celsius.
A comparison also showed that, in the month of June, maximum temperature had risen to exactly this level on June 4, 2017, second hottest day after 46.3 degrees Celsius, recorded on June 6, 2014.
The night was warm in the city as well with minimum temperature 31.3 degrees Celsius, 4.1 notches above normal. In Prayagraj, maximum temperature was 46.9 degrees Celsius, which, according to the daily IMD forecast bulletin, was the highest in the country. This was the fifth occasion in the past one week when Prayagraj has been the hottest place in the country.
The minimum temperature was 34.3 degrees Celsius, which made it the warmest night ever of June in Prayagraj’s 127 years observational history (1898-2024), shattering the previous record of 33.9 degrees Celsius recorded here on June 16, 2019.
“Clear skies and dry westerly winds from the desert region of Rajasthan are responsible for the heatwave conditions in the state for the past ten days,” said Mohammad Danish, senior scientist at the state Met department.
“Temperatures will remain high along with dry hot winds for at least next three days in most parts of the state but will drop gradually by 2-3 degrees thereafter because of the entry of moisture-laden easterly winds coming from the Bay of Bengal. The drop would be first witnessed in the eastern parts of the state followed by central and western UP in subsequent days,” he said. The maximum temperature in Kanpur IAF station was 46.7 degrees Celsius followed by Hamirpur 46.2 degrees Celsius, Varanasi airport (45.9), Jhansi (45.6), Varanasi BHU (45.5), Rae Bareli and Sultanpur (45.4 each), Kanpur City, Orai and Barabanki (45.2 each) and Bahraich (45).
