Chennai: NTK chief Seeman on Saturday sharpened his attack on actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam founder Vijay, challenging his remark made at his maiden Vikravandi conference that “Dravidam and Tamil nationalism” were like the “two eyes of this land”. But Seeman’s remarks on Vijay‘s silence on corruption charges against AIADMK triggered a backlash on social media.
Talking to reporters in Chennai, Seeman described Vijay as his ideological enemy. “How can Dravidam and Tamil nationalism be like two eyes? How can poison and medicine to extract poison be the same? How can a hero and a villain be the same,” he asked.
“This is not ideology but a rotten egg. You should stand on either side of the road but if you stand in the middle, you will be hit by a lorry,” said Seeman. On Friday, addressing a gathering to commemorate Tamil Nadu formation day, Seeman said, “Dravidam kept quiet when Balachandran (son of slain LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran) was killed, but Tamil nationalism cried for him.”
Earlier, he had indicated a willingness to form an alliance with TVK if Vijay decided to join forces with him. On Saturday, he wondered how Vijay could “sanctify AIADMK” when the party’s former leader J Jayalalithaa was imprisoned on corruption charges.
AIADMK women’s wing deputy secretary Gayathri Raguramm on X accused Seeman of being “DMK’s mouthpiece”. She defended Vijay, asserting that he was “politically mature even though he was a newcomer to politics”. Several AIADMK supporters criticised the NTK chief on X, noting that AIADMK did not oppose Vijay’s political entry. Some said corruption charges were foisted on Jayalalithaa by her opponents, pointing out that she died while she was serving as chief minister. A few supporters shared Seeman’s speech on social media, in which he is heard seeking AIADMK’s support during the Vikravandi byelection.
Incidentally, Seeman on Friday had praised AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami for his decisions (when he was chief minister), such as declaring the Cauvery delta a protected zone, making ‘Thai Poosam’ a public holiday, and recognising Nov 1 Tamil Nadu Day following a request from him.
